The One

Matthew 28:16-20

New International Version (NIV)

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

What if each day that slipped away

You never get back

Fall through the cracks

What if the only time we had

Was under attack

As a matter of fact...

In the pre-chorus of The One, I pose a bunch of different questions regarding the opportunity we have to lead others to Christ. I ask these questions because:

James 4:13-14

Amplified Bible (AMP)

13 Come now [and pay attention to this], you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and carry on our business and make a profit.” 14 Yet you do not know [the least thing] about what may happen in your life tomorrow. [What is secure in your life?] You are merely a vapor [like a puff of smoke or a wisp of steam from a cooking pot] that is visible for a little while and then vanishes [into thin air].

This is why The Great Commission is so important.

This fits in line with where our home should be. We have a responsibility and one opportunity to tell others about Christ, and we should be comfortable doing so.

It is vital to the eternal resting place of the world around us, as professing atheist Penn Jillette states:

“I don’t respect people who don’t proselytize. If you believe that there’s a heaven and a hell and people could be going to hell, or not getting eternal life [...] How much do you have to hate someone to not proselytize?

[...] If I believed beyond a shadow of a doubt that a truck was coming at you and you didn’t believe it, and that truck was bearing down on you, there’s a certain point where I tackle you. And [proselytizing] is more important than that.”

I personally wouldn’t go as far as stating that Christians don’t care or hate the lost so much, they choose not to proselytize, but I will say that most Christians are uncomfortable, unprepared, our as Jillette put it, it’s “...socially awkward...” to proselytize.

The obvious answer is that we need to be prepared, we need to be more comfortable with it, and the time is now to change.

I used to hate speaking in front of people. The way I got over this fear was by doing it over and over again in front of crowds until it got easier. I literally did it until it was second nature. The fear was removed after repeated confrontations with it. Public speaking was something I cared about and it was a necessity for my career, so there was no other option. It had to be done.

And to quote Jillette again:

“...And [proselytizing] is more important than that.”

It’s literally the difference between eternal life and eternal death. This quote by Christian Rapper Lecrae Moore sums it all up for me:

“If I’m wrong about God, then I wasted my life. If you’re wrong about God, then you wasted your eternity.”

So, a great place to start proselytizing is to simply say, “I care about you enough to tell you about something that means everything to me...”

Don’t wait until it’s too late.
